Ko Shamo

Names: This breed, develloped in Japan, is observed by "Nippon Kogata Shamo Hozonkai" since 1951. The earlier German designation "Ko Gunkei" in Japan never existed.
It only cased on a fantasy name, which sometimes one can still hear in breeder circles, yet. It should disappear finally out of our heads. In last years the quality of Ko Shamo strains in Germany was precipitously improved. Some considerable breeders contributed by delivery from very high-quality breeding material to the fact that the unattractively products of crossbreeding, which one still could saw some years ago on our exhibitions disappeared as far as possible. They however unfortunately still will exist. We have to breed the Ko Shamo in such a way like it happens in Japan already for some decades ago. Crossings or too far-breeds with products of crossbreeding doesn´t help the breeder and will irrevocably destroy the unique behavior of this breed.

Description: Ko Shamo are belonging to small Japanese Gamefowl breeds.
Under any circumstances this strain is not belonging as dwarf type to regard separated as on its own breed. In first worthy sight Ko Shamo is to be considered in its own type. That breed draws out by a strongly put up attitude,
extremely scarce, firmly fitting plumage ("needlesharp feathers" in the neck and full saddle slope), a strong head, finely and multiscaled runs and pronounced shoulders. The body is to be divided into three parts: 1/3 head and neck, 1/3 trunk and 1/3 thighs and runs. The longer the neck, the better it will be for Ko Shamo type. Thereby it is working the more nobly. Its finely pearl-structured strawberry comb is sitting firmly on front of the head.
Wattles are reduced as possible and the eye is pearlish-coloured.
The bare throat skin is clearly available but however is not pronounced so long as by Yamato Gunkei. Also the eyebrow is demanded and has to run out to the back of the head. In comparison with points of head of the Yamato Gunkei the head of the Ko Shamo is rather to designate as "dry"
The neck should taper itself to the trunk. The angular shoulders are the broadest part of the body. The wings are to carry firmly closed and should show the many times discussed "wing-gap", or the so-called "open wing". At scarce plumage the axial feather will be very small, but to my experience always presenting.
On broad and proudly carried chest, a broad, springless stripe of intensively red coloured bare skin is remarkably to notice over the breastbone. This arises as a result of the scarce plumage. Ko Shamo do show pronounced wing roses. An absolute breed characteristic is the so-called 5-bow-line, that is running over shoulders and backs. The more typeful the animal is, the more strongly this line will be pronounced. Tail is feathered briefly. Outside tail feathers are curved upwards and are resulting in the also for Yamato Gunkei´s typical-own "lobster-tail". Thighs are strong and pronounced. Runs are well-scaled, special description is: multi-lines finely scaled or "run-pearled". Also the toes are strong and relatively short. The hen does not show put up carriage so completely. In addition, to the hen requirements apply as far as possible to the breed characteristics, which a typeful rooster should present.
Sex-conditioned differences are naturally present. Recently Ko Shamo in Germany are bred in some color impacts, even pile is present already.
However, the main colour impacts are the gold-wheatons, silver-wheatons, whites, blacks and yellows with black tail. Also cuckoo, blue and blue-gold-wheaton are on their prosperous course.
In mentionend rare color impacts e.g. black-red or white with black tail some typeful birds are to notice, yet.

Origin: Japan

Weight: male: 800 to 1000 g
female: 600 to 800 g
However, older birds of several years sometimes can be over these weight-declarations sizes. According to my experience it is not bad, if they are concerning salient and typeful. By balanced mating one can bring the size back into the correct measure.
